Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)

Position Summary
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, medication management, and follow-up care for patients across the lifespan. The PMHNP collaborates closely with primary care providers, therapists, case managers, and interdisciplinary care teams to support integrated behavioral healthcare delivery.
This role may serve patients in outpatient clinic settings, integrated primary care environments, substance use recovery programs, and/or telehealth platforms depending on organizational needs and provider interests.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct psychiatric assessments, evaluations, and diagnostic interviews
- Develop individualized treatment plans for patients with mental health and substance use disorders
- Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications in accordance with state and federal regulations
- Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans as appropriate
- Collaborate with therapists, primary care providers, nursing staff, and care coordinators
- Provide crisis intervention and stabilization support when needed
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in the electronic health record
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and integrated care planning
- Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, and wellness strategies
- Support trauma-informed, culturally competent, patient-centered care delivery
Qualifications
Required
- Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited program
- Current Virginia Nurse Practitioner license
- Board Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)
- DEA registration and prescriptive authority eligibility
- Current BLS certification
- Strong clinical judgment, communication skills, and commitment to patient-centered care
Preferred
- Experience in community health, FQHC, integrated care, or outpatient psychiatry
- Experience treating substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions
- Experience with underserved or rural populations
